Al sinds een dik jaar ben ik begonnen aan een publicatie over de incarnatie, de menswording van Christus. Al sinds het begin van mijn christen-worden cirkelen mijn gedachten hieromheen; of beter gezegd, mijn aanbidding. Kijk eens naar deze preek van Augustinus:

The Maker of man became Man
that He, Ruler of the stars, might be nourished at the breast;
that He, the Bread, might be hungry;
that He, the Fountain, might thirst;
that He, the Light, might sleep;
that He, the Way, might be wearied by the journey;
that He, the Truth, might be accused by false witnesses;
that He, the Judge of the living and the dead,
might be brought to trial by a mortal judge;
that He, Justice, might be condemned by the unjust;
that He, Discipline, might be scourged with whips;
that He, the Grape, might be crowned with thorns;
that He, the Foundation, might be suspended upon a cross;
that Courage might be weakened;
that Security might be wounded;
that Life might die.       ( Sermones 191: 1)

Als je dit langzaam leest – Lectio Divina zeg maar – dan snap je waarom incarnatie ook altijd met aanbidding te maken heeft. Maar we mogen er ook over denken, om tot diepere aanbidding te komen. Daar wil ik me de komende jaren aan wijden. Ik wil het vooral aanpakken vanuit Duns Scotus, een middeleeuwse theoloog die veel te bieden heeft, ook op dit gebied. En ik laat het aansluiten bij de moderne filosofie, die zich ook in toenemende mate hieraan wijdt. God zij dank. Kijk, je kunt natuurlijk nadenken over ‘regels voor het mensenpark’, aannemend dat wij niets meer dan blinde, evoluerende apen zijn. Maar je kunt ook nadenken over het Licht der wereld.
